Are your students struggling to solve the mystery of book location? Not anymore. The Shelf Finder Game™ is great! It can be played many different ways and teaches alphabetical and numerical order based on the Dewey Decimal system. It also allows for whole class team building skills, or can be used with small groups or in a center. Students must put themselves in particular order based on card selection as well as find the location of non-fiction and fiction books.

One side of the playing cards are nonfiction with Dewey numbers and the first three letters of the author’s last name. On the other side of the Shelf Finder card are fiction books with “FIC” and the first three letters of the author’s last name. The cards are color coded on each side so there’s no confusion in playing. Played in small groups or with the whole class, each student must find their place in order based on their card as quickly as possible. There are many ways to play including best times, library location, and mixing cards. My students always came into the library wanting to play this game so they could beat their old score. This game is really cool because kids help kids so that their whole class wins.

** You can even play this game at your next faculty meeting as a refresher to reinforce how important proper book placement is in the library or use it as a “test” for any student interested in become a library helper.

If you have challenging students, this game is a must!
