Hunger Games for Dummies

Okay, so maybe you’re one of the few school librarians who haven’t read Suzanne Collin’s, The Hunger Games triology. Not to worry, there is a quick and easy solution for you before the movie comes out on Friday. Thanks to www.TheDailyBeast.com, you’ll be able to know everything about the book without actually having to read it. The Hunger Games for Dummies link is below. You can thank me later.

PS- When you do have time, read the series. It’s sooo very good.

Library apps you & your iPad will love!

Thanks to librarian, Carol Brown for sharing this link with us.  It’s worth your time to read what each of these apps can do and if you still think technology is not going to drastically change the public library…then I have some swampland I’d like to sell you in Florida. One of my favorite apps: Overdrive Media Console. Yep, makes your local library e-book selection a little more inviting

No more Shhhin’!

Freelance writer, Patti Ghezzi passed this link along to us. It inspired her to write a follow-up article for www.schoolfamily.com on ways to get your kids excited about, and through the doors of your local library. I’ll post the article when it comes out, in the meantime enjoy this one. Bet it will inspire you to look at your library’s PR and monthly events a little differently. Hey, the ideas can carry over to school media centers too!

Laugh Until You Cry:Jack Gantos

I was chatting with my mom a few weeks ago. She said, “Kathleen, have you heard about that children’s author who won a Newbery and spent time in jail. I know that doesn’t sound like a funny mix, but the man’s a hoot! I heard him on the radio and I couldn’t stop laughing!”

Having been in the library arena and a writer for so long, I should mention here that my entire family KNOWS about the Newbery Award.

My search was on for this mysterious author who had left such a humorous impression on my kin.

With a little research, I present to you a hilarious interview with the very talented, Jack Gantos care of Wait, Wait, Don’t Tell Me a wonderful NPR show.

Bring out the tissue; this is laugh until you cry kind of stuff.

Kindness Chain

On the back of my car there is a bumper sticker that reads BE KIND.  It’s a two word rule I like to live by, and wish more folks did. I don’t aways master kindness, but I sure try.  I came across this site with fun and impactful ways to incorporate kindness into the classroom, which could also extend to our libraries in fun ways. February 13th-19th is Random Act of Kindness Week, but it really should be an every day celebration.

A Little Bookmark Love

I have to admit, I’m just learning the whole Twitter thing. It’s pretty magical how much information floats daily and how many good ideas get shared.  One idea I loved were these cute and clever bookmarks made by K-12 librarian, Brenda Steffens.  You can see all the cool things she does in her Missouri school by either going to her blog www.bulldogreadit.blogspot.com or following her on Twitter @bulldogsread.
